Saints v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea’s pursuit of a top-four finish was dealt a blow as they were beaten at St Mary’s. Here’s how we rated the players in their 2-1 defeat.

Petr Cech: 6
Didn’t do a lot wrong, but his distribution was poor at times and he should perhaps have assessed the incoming free-kick from Rickie Lambert better for Southampton’s second goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Had an uneventful game without making any mistakes.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Showed he can certainly perform at centre-back when required and he may well have to do so again on Monday against Manchester United, when he will have a much sterner test.

John Terry: 6
Solid at the back and scored Chelsea’s goal.

Ryan Bertrand: 6
Chelsea missed the penetration that Ashley Cole can bring down the left-hand side and although Bertrand was quite reasonable defensively, he offered no real attacking threat.

Frank Lampard: 6
After his landmark 200th goal for the club a fortnight ago, it was surprising to see the in-form midfielder have such an ineffectual game. He found it difficult to take command in the middle of the park.

John Obi Mikel: 5
Also failed to influence in midfield before being replaced by the more energetic Ramires in the second half.

Victor Moses: 7
Perhaps the only consistent attacking threat for Chelsea when he had the ball. He created a number of chances and got into some great positions on the right-hand side.

Oscar: 5
Another player who went missing for large periods and was not the same attacking threat that Chelsea supporters have grown used to in his first season at the Bridge.

Marko Marin: 5
Surely a contender for one of the flop signings of the season, Marin was completely ineffectual on the left and appeared to lose faith in himself as the game wore on.

Fernando Torres: 5
Didn’t receive much service and was quiet.

Eden Hazard: 6
Came on and provided the extra dimension that Chelsea lacked for 60 minutes prior to his arrival on the pitch and flashed a wicked cross across goal that should have been turned in.

Ramires: 7
Took hold of things in midfield when he came on, winning the ball back a number of times in his own half and turning defence quickly into attack.
