Groves easily sees off Balmaceda

George Groves maintained his unbeaten record and his march towards a world title shot with a third-round knockout of Dario Balmaceda of Argentina at Wembley Arena.

Balmaceda, who was floored by a body shot towards the end of the second, failed to beat the count after being sent back to the canvas by a chopping right to the chin 58 seconds into the following round.

“He was hurt and once you give people no let-up, mentally it’s difficult for them,” said Groves.

“He was hurt physically – and he was just as hurt mentally. From my point of view, it was spot on. I was in control of the fight.

“It was tricky because I didn’t know much about him, but everything I tried in there came off and I felt good.

“I wanted to go in there and win it clean, because you never know what can happen in terms of cuts and I want to fight again soon.”

It was the 24-year-old from Hammersmith’s first fight since leaving promoter Frank Warren for Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport.

He is scheduled to appear as chief support to the world title fight between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler at the O2 Arena on 25 May.

Nottingham’s IBF champion Froch, who is also promoted by Matchroom, has been touted as a possible future opponent for Groves.
