QPR accused in ‘Dennis the Menace’ row
A furious QPR fan is accusing the club of stealing his idea for next season’s away kit.
Richard Deeney, who runs a menswear company, believes Rangers’ proposed red and black shirt is based on a mock-up he put together earlier this year.
Deeney set up a Facebook group to urge fans to back his proposed design, which he and others ‘tweeted’ to chairman Tony Fernandes as well as club staff.
QPR recently invited fans to choose from a number of possible away shirts in a poll on their official website.
The so-called Dennis the Menace look has been worn by the R’s in previous seasons and remains hugely popular, so is certain to be chosen.
And Deeney is convinced the design [pictured above] is based on his.
“I’m not looking to cause trouble. I’m a lifelong Rangers fan and it’s not really about the financial aspect,” he said.
“I’d just like the club to be courteous and honourable enough to admit the designs were based on ours.
“Sure, one or two things have been changed. But the basic ‘Dennis the Menace’ design is clearly based on our mock-up.
“We wanted a sharp, modern-looking kit, with clean lines, a slight retro feel, smarter collar etc, so we thought we would design our own kit.
“Tony Fernandes says he reads all tweets and I find it hard to believe he nor anyone at the club saw what we sent.
“There were several tweets sent and Facebook postings on fan and club pages from very early in the year to the club and Tony Fernandes.
“The club say no-one there saw the designs we suggested and I just don’t buy that. It’s too much of a coincidence.”
QPR insist their design is in no way based on Deeney’s and that the club were unaware of his suggestions.

Can’t believe this bloke is demanding money from the club! And he calls himself a fan! Despicable.

and very very finally. What I heard and can read its about a fan trying to design something for the club and just wanted some dues and to acknowledge seeing the design.. (and that was not for money!)

agarfunkel – why do you presume I’m after something? Or involved? I just like the campaign and the designs and backed. People should never presume when not really know the facts. Thats my last word on all.

Jesus. Hayden. Firstly you talk some rubbish. You seem think you know alot about someone and also about this campaign? When you haven’t got a clue! For starters why would someone clearly state “it’s not really about the financial aspect,” more likely so they wouldn’t have to keep going forums restating the FACT to fools and then to quote to know every single ‘like’ is to be about the Dennis The Menace kit coming back? You clearly haven’t read all the feedback on the page, where people are saying, “that’s nice, but i would change that”, would have no collar” etc etc…Feedback about our propose kit! About the design. 1. There is also two strips home and away. which clearly shows its a idea for a new kit 2. Ribbens clearly stated they would like to give it go’ to bring a simple wider hoop, slightly retro but modern kit!! Unlike our recent kits 3. For last time, this piece may look like its about the black and red kit its not, its a design question that is in question and the club seeing Ribbens proper design briefs. Please save you pity for yourself. Can’t make it any clearer.

What are you after slacks? even if the shirt is nicked from yours (which I don’t see) what do you want? you’re the one who started the facebook page, aren’t you happy the club came out with the shirt you wanted?

Doctor HU…he is clearly asking for money. Read the subtly of his statements. Don’t be fooled he wants the money.
Slacks: prove me wrong. Waive you rights to the design publically. Go on, do the right thing.

I didn’t call you a toe-rag I said you’d be a toe-rag if you were trying to exploit this for personal gain. Bearing in mind the people who supported you on Facebook were not doing it to try to get the ‘look and feel’ as you designed it, they were supporting you because they want the black and blue back…don’t kid yourself that those ‘likes’ were based on your design. It is clear you are motivated by money which is a shame. I feel sorry for you and more sorry for the Facebook users you are exploiting.

I have just had an idea for a new home shirt for next season! It is white and blue hoops as opposed to blue and white hoops. Please vote in favour of it and perhaps the club will make it happen. Please note I would like some recogniaion if the club design anything remotely near this. What total tool this bloke is!! I have a red and black shirt from 1983. As if our club hasnt got enough on its plate at the moment.

Some of the comments here say that any Rs fans would design something similar. Would you? Really? Would the collars be flapped/ round/ v-neck/ buttoned? Would the sleeves be hooped/ solid colour/ striped? And how thick would the overall hoops be? There are many permutations to the finished design of a football kit and to me these two look remarkably similar. Given a blank piece of paper and a set of colouring pens I doubt, by the nature of the comments I’ve read, many of you would get further than removing the lids and sniffing the felty nibs!
Really can’t believe the grief being dished out to this guy. He’s not moaning but simply asking for some recognition from the club. It’s more than likely down to his initiative that we’ll be seeing the Rs back in the beloved red ‘n’ black hoops next season. Well done mate!

There really isn’t that much you can change on a red and black hooped shirt, the amount of hoops and the collar , really cant see why this fan is so upset, as someone has posted its virtually the same kit as the old Guinness sponsored one, in the early eighties.

Thanks for comments Hayden. Firstly you don’t have quote the law to me, I’m quite aware of that thanks. Secondly going on forum and calling someone a toerag and not a true fan, money grabber? Is big talk. Very constructive. Well done. I think you will find the whole argument is something based more on what most people call principles.

The fact is all the campaign was about was bringing back the black and red ohoops as opposed to all these other hideous away kits we’ve seen. That’s happened by the looks of it, the details are unimportant. The campaign has worked, be happy. No orange away kit equals huge result. Heavens above.

Fair play for coming on here to answer the criticism slacks, but you need to answer a question directly not keep referring people to your Facebook page:
Presuming you are correct and the club did get the idea from you, why are you annoyed…surely you’ve got what you want? Your statement saying ‘it is not really about the money’ implies…well, it is a little bit. If you publically waive the rights to the design, here on this board, then QPR can accept they may have seen it and I’ll support you (even though I agree with the guys above, there are previous kits with are more similar to their one than yours) otherwise you’re a money grabbing toe-rag in my opinion and not a true fan.
Two points to be aware of, to prove something has been copied you need to prove there are not ‘7 moves’ from the original. I think I can see 7 so you wouldn’t have a legal case based on ‘passing off’ (it’s not infringement of copyright as you cannot copyright this). Secondly you did not have permission to reproduce the Air Asia logo which is under international Trademark. You shouldn’t have done this.

It’s the overall design of the shirt? The look and feel! Not the colourways or fact it’s the Dennis the menace colours or about money? Read the piece. Of course it’s been tweaked. If you can’t see the resemblance then your mistaken. The history of it being sent to club and chairman. Check out the history of the campaign. Maybe!

I think you’re all slightly missing the point? Its the fact they were trying to get a campaign to design a very clean modern/retro looking kit for next season (nothing like the VERY recent kits we have seen, with many hoops, strange collars details, etc. They designed a kit and then tweeted to the club and started a facebook page, which I’ myself liked and many others. Of course there is some slight small different tweaks, but there is also very much of design as whole that is very similar. Its not the fact its black and red and the history of kits gone before its more about the style of the whole feel of kit. And the fact it was tweeted and send to club many times with positive comments. I think that is the point!

I can’t see how he can accuse the club of nicking his design when the Dennis the menace away shirt has been around for years ??

Sorry, but I don’t understand what this guy is talking about??? The 2 shirts look completely different!!! Lets have a look:-
Right——- 3 red hoops including top hoop incorporating collar, 3 black hoops continuing onto the short sleeves. End of sleeves red.
Left——— 3 black hoops including top hoop which incorporates RED collar. 2 red hoops which continue onto short sleeves. End of sleeves BLACK
Right——- shirt back longer than shirt front
Left——— shirt back and front same length
Mate, these 2 shirts could not be less alike unless they were totally different colours!!! The designs are totally different!!! I don’t think Tony Fernandez will be worrying about a law suit, coz I think you are a touch barmy geez!!!!

This guy needs to get a life, the only reason they are similar is because of the concept in the first place ie red and black hoops. It’s like Melchester Rovers getting the Rss at Galatasaray for they shirt design!

Or the kit is based on all the other red and black hooped kits that we have had in the past….

It’s a different shade of red. The hoops are in a different order, and different widths, and one has six hoops, with thin outlines to the hoops, the other five hoops and no outlines. The sleeves are different, The shape is different. The collar is different, and one has buttons, the other doesn’t. Apart from that, they’re identical, so I can see why he’s upset …
