Benitez hoping to emulate famous Liverpool victory
Rafael Benitez will be hoping to emulate Liverpool’s famous victory over Olympiakos when Chelsea fight to stay in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Liverpool went on to lift the trophy under Benitez in 2005 after Steven Gerrard’s late goal at Anfield took them into the knockout stage in dramatic fashion.
Chelsea must also win their final group game to have a chance of progressing, although their fate is not in their own hands – they must see off Nordsjaelland and hope Shakhtar Donetsk beat Juventus.
The Blues interim manager said: “It’s similar in terms of we have to win. It’s not similar in that it’s not just dependent on you.
“It’s easy – you can do a lot of maths and analysis but at the end of the day you have to win and that’s it. We then hope Shakhtar win.
“For us it’s an easy approach. We cannot be worried about another game, we just have to win.”
