Donaldson gives Bees victory at Pompey
Portsmouth 0 Brentford 1
Clayton Donaldson’s early goal gave Brentford their first away league win of the season – and the club’s first victory at Fratton Park since 1980.
Donaldson’s near-post header from Adam Forshaw’s free-kick – the striker’s eighth goal of the campaign – was enough to end the Bees’ barren run on the road.
But their triumph came at a cost. Club captain Kevin O’Connor was stretchered off on 57 minutes having come on a first-half substitute for Tom Adeyemi, who also picked up an injury.
Portsmouth offered little for much of the game, with former QPR playmaker Akos Buzsaky their main attacking threat.
Buzsaky twice fired over from long range and also had a free-kick saved by Richard Lee, who was preferred to Simon Moore in goal.
Pompey did finish strongly, with Izale McLeod and Lubomir Michalik heading wide and Lee Williamson blasting over before Brian Howard went close to equalising with a free-kick.
At the other end, Scott Barron and Harlee Dean both missed chances to double Brentford’s lead.
Brentford: Lee; Logan, Dean, Craig, Bidwell; Diagouraga; Forshaw, Douglas, Adeyemi (O’Connor 23 (Barron 57), Forrester (Saunders 85); Donaldson
Subs: Moore, Dallas, Hayes, German
