Cisse lifts struggling QPR off the bottom

QPR 1 Reading 1

Djbril Cisse’s second-half equaliser – his first league goal of the season – lifted QPR off the bottom of the table.

Rangers, still without a league win this term, were trailing to Kaspars’ Gorkss goal against his former club when Cisse, who had been having a poor game, buried his first real chance.

The striker controlled Jose Bosingwa’s right-wing cross and then stabbed the ball past keeper Alex McCarthy.

Gorkss, who also scored in Rangers’ recent League Cup defeat against Reading, pounced when the home side failed to deal with Nick Shorey’s 16th-minute corner.

Sean Morrison headed against the bar and Gorkss’ left-footed follow-up went through the hands of keeper Julio Cesar and past Esteban Granero on the line.

McCarthy produced a brilliant save to ensure Reading led at the break, tipping Granero’s free-kick onto the bar with Bosingwa volleying over from the rebound.

Granero went close with another free-kick early in the second half, but Rangers struggled to create clear-cut chances before Cisse levelled on 66 minutes.

And another marvellous save by McCarthy prevented Adel Taarabt putting the R’s ahead with seven minutes to go.

Rangers broke on the counter-attack and Cisse found the Moroccan, who span away from Chris Gunter only to see his low shot tipped away.

QPR (4-4-2): Cesar, Bosingwa, Ferdinand, Nelsen, Traore (Onuoha 84); Hoilett, Granero, Diakite, Taarabt; Hoilett, Mackie (Zamora 81).
Subs not used: Green, Derry, Hill, Wright-Phillips, Faurlin.
