Cole injury being assessed by Chelsea

Ashley Cole’s ankle problem is being assessed by Chelsea over the next 24 hours.

Cole picked up the injury during Sunday’s controversial league defeat against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

He was not considered for the cup clash with United on Wednesday and is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to face Swansea.

Manager Roberto Di Matteo said: “Ashley was not available because of the injury. Hopefully he will be be okay for Saturday, but I can’t say yet.”

And Di Matteo will need to monitor the fitness of several other players following the gruelling League Cup victory over United, which went to extra time.

He explained: “We’ll have to assess the team over the next two days. Playing extra time has taken more energy than we would have liked.

“But, on the other hand, spirit is sky-high and when the mood is positive you feel the fatigue a little bit less.

“We’ll see what players are fresh and feel the most energised for Saturday.”
