Boss slams defending after Chelsea’s defeat in Monaco
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo slammed his side’s shoddy defending following their 4-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup.
The Blues were 3-0 down at half-time after a stunning hat-trick from Radamel Falcao, who produced a breathtaking display of class and finishing.
And Di Matteo told ITV: “In the first half we were very poor and they were very sharp. We were very slow and sloppy and were penalised.
“We tried, but they were much better than us – especially in the first half. We gave him [Falcao] too much space and you can’t give him that, because he’s too dangerous.”
He added: “We’ve got a lot to learn and have got to get much better. It’s a shame we have not been competitive in a European final.
“But we’ll bounce back. It was a bad defeat today but we’ve had some good games before. We just didn’t play well tonight at all.
“We gave away three goals and you can’t do that against a team like Atletico Madrid.”

Chelsea f.c problems in defence and mid field will continue forever if the likes of worn-out Ashley cole, Terry and Lampard are still given a lot of time to play. What makes me question Di Matteo tactics is the very poor selection of the team since Match- day 1 of this season, Lampard cannot play the Holding mid-field role at all, at the left side of defense Cole is assisted by Bertrand Lampard really leaves a lot of work to Mikel as he becomes lost on the pitch, why not bench Cole at once for Bertrand??? and Lampard for Oscar/ Victor Moses??? so as to incorporate young, energytic and ambitious players?
Or try to play David Luiz and or Ramires with Mikel at the front of the back four, Cahill+ Ivanovich at Centre back and Azpilicuetta at the right back?? Di matteo should not forget that his Contract is too short that any time he might pack his bags!!!! since Pep Guardiola is still waiting

Some of your commentators are letting themselves down by bad spelling eg: stricker,atemt,phylosophy for philosophy, de for the. Anyway Chelsea were exposed as tactically and technically inferior, very humiliating.

I,m so dissapointd 2 av watch dat match…d coach nd d players r 2b blamed..@least he should av introduce players dat can attack& @ d same time defend..d likes of meriales,2 strengtn d defence bcos much pressure was on d defence..mikel waz d only defencive mifilder dat ws active in dat macth..all other were nt withdrawin..blame 2d coach 4 nt introducin sturrige or moses on time..

I think we will strugle big time to win big games, flair won’t win you a game, goals will win you a game, and goal machines are costly. We always claim, we are held at ransom by clubs who have proven goal scorers who can win games on their own but we prefer arsenal phylosophy and barca model.
We will pay a price or Di Mateo will pay the price for being naïve. Buy a strikers and be assured of goals not wingers and mid fielders. You let Cavani slip through your fingers. Last year you let kun Aguero and Neymar.

It was an accident waiting to happen, Chelsea have been suspect in defence for a long time especially on the left,but have survived against lesser opposition but faced with pace and class – CRASH!

RDM should learn to use a pure winger, if he wants to stretch oposition defence and not a diffencieve midfilder. Lampard did not contribute anything to the defence, let alone attack.

Lampard..no offfence..you slow down chelsea tempo when chelsea needed it most..
You are the captain..once you slow down the team..everyone will follows..
I dont think A.M would win if chelsea up the tempo

What a shame! And not only the defenders have to be blamed, the failure of Di Matteo to organise an effective tactic to contain Falcao and to make adjustments after the second goal was fatal.
