Fulham out after defeat at Hillsborough

Gary Madine’s penalty five minutes into the second half sent Fulham out of the Capital One Cup.

Madine calmly converted from the spot after Chris Maguire had been hacked down in the area by Stephen Kelly.

Martin Jol’s side were unable to come up with an equaliser, with Brede Hangeland heading over from Damien Duff’s free-kick and Owls keeper Stephen Bywater superbly saving Marcello Trotta’s header from Sascha Rither’s cross.

Hangeland did put the ball in the net but his header from Hugo Rodallega’s free-kick was ruled out for offside.

Sheffield Wednesday’s goal followed a dull opening 45 minutes in which Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami sent a 25-yarder over the bar and Whites keeper Mark Schwarzer kept out a long-range effort from Michail Antonio.

And Antonio missed the best chance of the first half when he burst into the penalty area only to fire over.

Fulham were forced to make a late change to their team after Bryan Ruiz suffered an injury during the warm-up and was replaced in the starting line-up by Duff.

They piled forward in the closing stages but Wednesday stood firm – and almost scored a second when Nejc Pecnik’s effort struck the bar.
