Toms is ready for title showdown

Ryan Toms’ manager Dave Currivan says his fighter is determined to win back the southern area light-middleweight title this weekend.

Toms, from Northolt, held the belt until a first-round defeat against fellow West Londoner Steve O’Meara at Bethnal Green’s York Hall last year.

O’Meara has since vacated the title, meaning it will be up for grabs when Toms and Weise, whose last meeting ended in a draw, lock horns again.

Former solider Toms, 30, has been sparring with Alan Higgins of Kilburn – who makes his professional debut on Saturday’s bill – and unbeaten Birmingham prospect Thomas Costello.

“It’s gone really well. Ryan’s had some very good sparring and is really focused on this fight,” Currivan told West London Sport.

“Everything’s gone as we’d have wanted it to and Ryan’s really looking forward to Saturday night.

“He knows what he’s got to do and is in good shape. He wants that title back and has trained hard for this one.”

A victory would put Toms back in the frame for a shot at the British title or a possible rematch with O’Meara.

“We’d definitely take a rematch. It’s a fight we’d like to happen,” Currivan added.

“Ryan was caught cold when they fought before. We’d like the chance to do it again.”
