Cifuentes happy for Celar after QPR victory

Marti Cifuentes hopes Zan Celar’s goals for QPR against Cardiff prove to be the first two of many for the club.

The much maligned Celar, making his 20th appearance since his summer move to west London, got off the mark in emphatic style to give Rangers a 2-0 win which lifted them off the bottom of the Championship table.

After Paul Smyth’s throw from the right was headed on by Jimmy Dunne, the Slovenian striker controlled the ball before striking a glorious half-volley on the turn into the top corner of the net.

And in a stoppage-time counter-attack, Celar coolly chipped keeper Jak Alnwick to seal the victory.

Cifuentes said: “For the whole group, which has been very protective and supportive of him, it (the first goal) was a goal for him but like a goal that all of us scored because we have been really looking for this for him.

“These two goals will hopefully increase his confidence and be the first two of many.

“What we need to do is to provide him with more and more chances because we know that inside the box he’s a very good player.”

The win – only Rangers’ second in the league this season – eased the pressure on head coach Cifuentes.

He remains popular with fans, who chanted his name throughout the game.

“It was an important win for us as a team and a club. I’m happy for the players because they have been working hard in a difficult period,” he said.

“I’m happy because we took our chances and showed the quality and efficiency we were missing in other games.”
