Why the omens look so good for City against QPR
As if Manchester City weren’t strong enough favourites for Sunday’s game, the omens look very good for them given that QPR and end-of-season celebrations seem to go hand in hand. If there’s a team you want to be playing when chasing glory, it’s Rangers.
Liverpool and Everton both clinched championships against them in past decades, and in recent years promotions and titles have tended to be decided when the R’s are around. In fact, this could be the FIFTH year in a row in which champions have been crowned following a QPR match…
2003
Two clubs celebrate against QPR. A goalless draw at Loftus Road means Crewe are promoted to the second tier as they cannot be caught by Rangers, who go into the play-offs and lose to Cardiff – in Cardiff – in the final.
2004
Final-day drama and this time it’s Rangers who celebrate as they win at Sheffield Wednesday to clinch automatic promotion. But not before Plymouth, who finish as champions, beat QPR at Home Park to seal their place in the Championship two weeks earlier.
2008
Silverware is paraded in front of QPR again as West Brom lift the Championship trophy following a 2-0 victory at Loftus Road on the last day of the campaign.
2009
This time it’s Wolves’ party Rangers are caught up in. Mick McCarthy’s men beat them in a tense game at Molineux to secure their promotion to the top flight.
2010
More celebrations at QPR, this time as Newcastle sign off as champions on the final day of the season at Loftus Road.
2011
Yet again a trophy is lifted at Loftus Road – but it’s QPR’s. After it’s confirmed they will not be docked points for breaches of rules in the signing of Alejandro Faurlin, the final-day match against Leeds becomes an emotional celebration.
2012?
Once again QPR are involved in end-of-season drama. Will it be glory for City or can Rangers spoil the party and do Manchester United a favour?
