Hughes to take no chances with QPR forward’s fitness

Heidar Helguson could yet make the bench for QPR’s crunch clash with Manchester City, but manager Mark Hughes insists he will take no chances with the forward’s fitness.

Helguson recently suffered a setback in his recovery from the ongoing groin problem that has plagued him for much of the season.

He has since made good progress and it does not appear that the injury will require further surgery.

The Icelander will be assessed before the weekend and Hughes would like to be able to call upon him if possible.

“Heidar’s still feeling a little bit of discomfort. I’m not going to push him back too quickly because that might set him back again,” Hughes told West London Sport.

“In his enthusiasm to come back he’s probably compromised himself a little bit. It’s a shame because it means I’ve not had the option of picking him.

“I’ll be guided by Heidar and the medical staff. If he can be available for the last game then great – and he might be – but it’s probably unlikely I would think.”
