Opinion: What should the future hold for Trevoh Chalobah?
Chelsea have had many players come and go from Stamford Bridge over the years, with some making more of an impact than others. With the influx of signings for sizeable transfer fees, it has meant that some of the club’s academy players have found it tough to break into their first-team.
One of the players to break that sequence is Trevoh Chalobah, who has gone on to make 63 appearances for the Blues’ senior team. Chalobah had been a regular in the first-team setup last season, but has found regular minutes hard to find under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, who continues to struggle to find momentum in their results since taking charge of the club.
It looks a tough ask for Chelsea to finish in the top-six this season based on their poor start under Pochettino’s watch. MyBettingSites provided us with the latest betting odds on LiveScore Bet for the top-six finish in the Premier League this term.
- Newcastle United @ 2/5
- Aston Villa @ 4/5
- Brighton & Hove Albion @ 5/4

It’s recently been reported that Italian giants Roma are believed to be keen on striking a deal with Chelsea to sign Chalobah, although it remains to be seen as to whether any potential agreement would be a temporary or permanent one. Chalobah is contracted with Chelsea until the summer of 2028, and you’d imagine that the club won’t be looking to sell him cheaply when he’s still so early into his senior career.
However, it’ll be interesting to see whether the defender pushes for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the coming months, as he’ll be eager to secure regular minutes at a high level at the earliest of opportunities. A move to Roma could present that, as Jose Mourinho’s side are competing for a top-six finish in Serie A, as well as having a 100% record in their Europa League campaign to date, which makes for impressive reading.
With Mourinho operating with a defensive trio, it would suit Chalobah, as he’s familiar with that setup, having played in that formation for Chelsea last season. Therefore, you’d like to think that it wouldn’t take him too long to adapt to Mourinho’s style of football with Roma. Only time will tell as to whether Chalobah will feature in the Chelsea first-team when he returns from an injury setback which he suffered in October. We’ve already seen glimpses of his quality with the Blues last season, and given his versatility, he could be a useful option for Pochettino, who isn’t exactly blessed with a considerable amount of strength in depth due to the injury crisis in recent months.
If that injury crisis is to worsen heading towards the potentially season-defining festive period, then you would imagine that Chalobah will be staying with Chelsea, as they’ll need him for the busy run of fixtures from then until the end of the 2023/24 season. However, if the club are to strengthen their defensive options in January, then a temporary move to the likes of Roma could be a tempting option for all parties involved.
