Townsend ‘staggered’ by Mount contract situation

Former Chelsea captain Andy Townsend says he is “staggered” by the club’s apparent hesitation in giving Mason Mount a new contract.

Mount’s contract is due to expire next year and he has yet to agree a new deal, prompting speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Townsend believes other players deserve to be shown the door after a poor season for the Blues.

Speaking on Talksport, Townsend also said he felt Conor Gallagher isn’t quite good enough to establish himself as a first-team regular for Chelsea, but that Mount must be retained.

He said: “I’m staggered by the way it’s gone for Mason. He is and will continue to be an outstanding player. He ticks all the boxes you want.

“Yes he’s had a dip in confidence. Everyone has that. But is that boy made of the right stuff that they want? Yes.

“All the players knocking around at Stamford Bridge who do very little, they’ve decided Mason Mount is someone they won’t give a contract to.”
