Lampard has ‘no regrets’ about taking Chelsea job

Frank Lampard insists he has no regrets taking on the Chelsea job until the end of the season despite losing all six of his matches in charge so far.

Lampard, who was sacked by Everton in January, took over the reins at Stamford Bridge for the second time last month after Graham Potter was axed.


Defeat by Bournemouth would leave Lampard with a unenviable record of 11 straight losses as a Premier League manager, given he lost his final four games in charge of the Toffees before being shown the door.

But he says he is not worried about reputational damage that may arise from his return to the dugout at the club he served so magnificently as a player.

“If I went into jobs thinking about my reputation, the world is so connected now, people talk about you in every way, shape or form., so I don’t think you can do that,” Lampard said.

“You have to take things on instinct. My gut instinct was to come here and try and help things.

“Not just the team but the club because it is in a difficult moment.”

Chelsea are suffering their worst run of results since the 1993/94 season when Glenn Hoddle was manager and the team finished 14th in the Premier League.

The Blues are currently in 12th spot, but defeat on Saturday would see the Cherries leapfrog Chelsea and if Wolves beat Aston Villa Lampard’s side could slide to 14th.

With the team facing away trips to Manchester United and Manchester City and a visit from Newcastle in three of their final four games, Lampard is fully aware there is a real chance of a horror end to the season.

“You have to accept our run-in and I knew wasn’t going to get an easy ride,” he said.

“I am very aware of our run-in for the last three games of the season.

“But I have no regrets, I am very happy to be here working and I will do anything I can to help.

“I have had some big challenges, that is what life is about.

“I am fortunate enough at the same time to say I have managed Chelsea twice, Everton which is a huge football club and Derby County – another huge football club.

“So I certainly have no regrets but maybe I will feel a certain way when I move on.”
