Ainsworth hints at potential new QPR deal for Martin

Gareth Ainsworth has indicated that Chris Martin might be given a new contract to stay at QPR beyond the end of the season.

The striker, 34, was signed on a short-term deal in February as cover while Lyndon Dykes was recovering from pneumonia.

Martin has since made 14 appearances for the R’s, scoring four goals, and his late winner at Burnley last Saturday moved the club closer to Championship survival.

Ainsworth made Martin captain after taking over as head coach.

And although the Rangers boss is reluctant to discuss his plans until Rangers are safe from the drop, there appears to be a strong chance that Martin will be retained.

Ainsworth said: “I don’t really want to talk about the summer. I just want to get this (avoiding relegation) over the line. As soon as we’re safe I’ll give an answer to that.

“Chris for me has been a fantastic player. I made him captain for a reason – he’s got real leadership qualities.

“I want to keep my leaders, so make of that what you will.”

Meanwhile, Jake Clarke-Salter is set to be available for QPR’s trip to Stoke.

And Mick Beale is expected to make a move for Chris Willock when the season finishes.
