Chelsea miss chances as they go out of Champions League

Chelsea went out of the Champions League despite a spirited second-leg performance at Stamford Bridge.

Their lack of a cutting edge was evident again as they were unable to convert their chances, two Rodrygo goals sealed Real Madrid’s place in the semi-finals.

Chelsea, 2-0 down from the first leg, created several openings before the interval but N’Golo Kante and Marc Cucurella failed to take glorious chances to score.


Kante missed a sitter when he fired wide of the target and, in the final moments of the first half, Reece James’ low cross ran to an unmarked Cucurella, who was denied at point-blank range by former Blues keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Frank Lampard’s side continued to create chances early in the second half but were undone by a 58th-minute counter-attack when Rodrygo raced past Trevoh Chalobah on the right.

The Brazilian played the ball across the face of goal towards Karim Benzema, who was unable to apply the finish but Vinicius Jnr was on hand to tee up Rodrygo to score.

And with 10 minutes to go, Chelsea were carved open again and Federico Valverde played the ball to Rodrygo, who virtually walked the ball into the net.

The defeat means Chelsea have lost all four matches since Lampard returned to the club as interim boss.
