Woeful Chelsea beaten by Brighton

Chelsea 1 Brighton 2

Frank Lampard’s first game back at Stamford Bridge since his return as interim boss ended in defeat as goals from Danny Welbeck and Julio Enciso gave Brighton the points.

Chelsea took the lead after 13 minutes through Conor Gallagher’s deflected effort, after great work by Mykhalio Mudryk on the left-hand side.

Kaoru Mitoma had two great chances to equalise before the break, having spent much of the afternoon giving Trevor Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana a torrid time from the left flank, but lacked a clinical edge.

That edge was provided by Danny Welbeck on 41 minutes. The substitute came on to replace the injured Evan Ferguson and found himself on the end of a pinpoint Pascal Groß cross, which he was able to guide past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

In the 69th minute, another Brighton substitute, Julio Enciso, powered a sensational strike from 25 yards into the top corner, after Chelsea gave the ball away cheaply in their own half.

Chelsea: Kepa, Chalobah, Badiashile, Fofana (James, 56′), Chilwell, Zakaria (Mount, 73′), Fernandez (Kovacic, 56′), Gallagher, Mudryk, Pulisic (Ziyech, 56′), Sterling (Felix, 56′)
