Three Of Chelsea’s Best Ever Players In The Premier League Era
The Premier League era has led to one of Chelsea’s most successful periods in their recent history. The Blues have been crowned champions of England on five occasions since the formation of the Premier League, while Chelsea has also been crowned champions of Europe on two occasions.
But, which players have been able to write their names in the history of the club as one of the finest players to play for the Blues in the Premier League era?
Frank Lampard
You’d be hard-pressed to argue with the fact that Frank Lampard was the best player to ever pull on a Chelsea shirt. The midfielder is the highest scorer for the club, and is widely regarded as one of the finest players of his generation. Lampard holds the record for the most goals scored by a midfielder in the Premier League, and he also holds the record for the most goals scored from outside the box.
The now Everton boss signed for the Blues in 2001 for just £11 million, and played at Stamford Bridge for 13 years, scoring 211 goals in 648 games. Lampard won virtually everything that there was to win during his Blues career, which includes the Premier League title on three occasions and the Champions League in 2012. He also just missed out on making the list of British Ballon d’Or winners in 2005.
John Terry
There were few more formidable defenders in the world game than John Terry when he was at the height of his powers. The central defender came through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, before signing his first professional deal in 1998. Terry is still regarded as one of the best defenders in Premier League history, and he was included in the FIFPro World XI on five consecutive occasions between 2005 and 2009.
The central defender is the most successful captain in the history of Chelsea, as he won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and four FA Cups during his 19-year stay with the Blues. Terry departed Chelsea in 2017, as he moved to Aston Villa on a free transfer, but he has since returned to the club as a coaching consultant for the youth academy.
Eden Hazard
During Eden Hazard’s peak runs of form in the Premier League for Chelsea, the Belgian winger was simply unplayable. Chelsea sent shockwaves across Europe when they agreed to sign the winger from Lille in 2012, as all of the biggest clubs across Europe were looking to sign Hazard. However, he made an immediate impression at Stamford Bridge, as he won the Europa League in his first season, before picking up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in his second.
In his third season, Hazard was the star man, as Chelsea regained the Premier League title. His performances on the pitch also saw him land the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Players’ Player of the Year. Hazard would win his second premier League title two years later, and his season was capped off by winning the FA Cup. He signed off on a high for the club in the 2019 Europa League final, scoring twice in a win against Arsenal, before moving to Real Madrid for over £90 million.
