Are QPR genuine promotion contenders?
Kevin Gallen believes QPR’s strength in depth has been a key factor behind the positive start to the season, but admits one area still concerns him.
Rangers’ 2-1 win over Reading, their third victory on the bounce, saw Mick Beale’s side climb to third in the Championship.
And, speaking on the West London Sport QPR Podcast, former R’s forward Gallen said the options Beale has in key areas such as central defence and central midfield have been a major reason for the good form of late.
However, Gallen fears injuries to full-backs Ethan Laird and Kenneth Paal would scupper QPR’s promotion chances.
“You’re looking on the bench and thinking ‘You know what, I can trust these players just as much as the ones on the pitch’,” Gallen said.
“For whatever reason the manager picks a team, whether it’s maybe for a tactic or for freshness, he’s got seven subs on the bench who can come in and do just as well as the 11 on the pitch.
“That’s a really good thing, and when you have that quality on the bench you have a good chance of winning more games than you lose.
“But I’m still a little bit worried about the full-back situation. Have we got the depth there to maintain a promotion push?”
Gallen was joined by West London Sport’s Dan Bennett and Ian McCullough.
They also discussed Tim Iroegbunam’s eventful display against Reading, Lyndon Dykes’ double, and whether QPR can yet be considered genuine promotion contenders.
