Warburton praises QPR defence after win at Hull

QPR boss Mark Warburton praised his side’s defence after securing a first league win of the season with a 3-0 win at Hull City.

Goals from Chris Willock, Lyndon Dykes and Rob Dickie wrapped up an emphatic win that was slightly flattering to the visitors, who spent large spells of the second half under pressure as the home side pressed for an equaliser following Willock’s first-half strike.

Last-ditch goal-line clearances from Moses Obubajo and Dickie to deny Keane Lewis-Potter and ex-QPR loanee Matt Smith kept Rangers in front before Dykes doubled the lead in the first half.

“I thought Jordy de Wijs was outstanding. When you come back to your old club with the fans here, he did so well,” Warburton said.

“Yoann (Barbet), Rob and Lee Wallace were tremendous. Mo (Moses Odubajo) likewise.

“The two we cleared off the line with big blocks – they would have gone in before Christmas last year, we had so many in that type of situation.

“We showed a lot of character today. We picked up second ball all of the basic stuff. Fans love goals, but the clean sheet was a big statement from us.

“To come here, it’s a tough place to come. They know how to win from getting promoted last year. It was a tough test for us and we came through it.”

Charlie Austin missed the game due to the knee injury he picked up against Millwall and is uncertain for the trip to Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

“The game was perhaps 36 hours too soon for Charlie. He will return to training on Monday and we will see how he is,” Warburton said.
