Coach under pressure 2021 season – Football players looking for some luck
England’s head coach, Eddie Jones is under a bit of pressure as the 2021 season is underway and not cooperating in his favor. After coming in 5th place in the Six Nations Campaign, The Rugby Football Union (RFU) will review his performance. Jones signed his contract less than 1-year ago and it goes through 2023. However, there is a clause that will allow the contract to be broken. It is customary to review the coach after the Six Nations Campaign. The fact that there is a review in itself is not unusual. Only the fact that Jone is newly under contract and the team placed so poorly draws attention to this action.
Bill Jones, 61-year old Australian, has an impressive career that spans more than 20-years and four rugby cups. Before signing on to England he was appointed as the Head Coach of Japan and tasked with preparing the team for the 2015 World Cup, where the team won against South Africa.
Let us not forget the games of 2018. Jones’ team hit the same fate, 5th place in the Six Nations Campaign. Only 18-months later, Jones led England to the World Cup Final. There are a lot of supporters who believe he can do it again.
Players
Some of the players are on his side. Several have voiced their opinions that he can only coach, he can’t play for them.
Maro Itoje said, “He’s one of the best coaches I’ve worked with. His work rate, his knowledge, his feeling with the players, the way he goes about his business are genuinely second to none.
“As players, we need to be accountable for our behaviors. At the end of the day, Eddie can’t play the game for us.
“The players need to be accountable and if you ask any player who has been under Eddie, I doubt anyone will say differently. He’s a truly special coach. “As players, we need to grab hold of it and take ownership of our actions. We’re disappointed because we know that, as a team, we’re capable of so much more.
“It’s just on us. I don’t have any excuses here – we just weren’t good enough. We’re a team that can do so much more, but we didn’t show that.”
Players looking for some luck
Football players have a lot of skill and they work hard. But they are also notorious for looking for luck. As a matter of fact, sports stars have a long history of rituals and items that they use to bring them luck before every game.
Here are some sports star ritual examples:
Ben Stokes, Cricket
England’s Cricket World Cup legend Ben Stokes. His ritual? While on the cricket field, any item of clothing that has a left, such as shoes or gloves, that’s what he puts on first.
John Henderson
Jaguar’s defensive tackle John Henderson is. At 6’7 and upwards of 350 pounds, Henderson could be described as nothing short of a monster.
And this monster had a very particular way of getting psyched up for a game. Henderson would have a Jags assistant trainer straight up slap him across the face, as hard as possible.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo from the Portugal soccer team makes sure his right foot touches the grass first before he steps onto the field.
Thibaut Courtois – Spanish Club Real Madrid & Belgium National Team
Goalkeeper
Ritual includes:
- Entered the stadium at a specific time
- Tests his girlfriend that he is changing clothes and not to text him until the game has ended
- He goes to the bathroom and takes a selfie of himself sitting on the toilet, and texts it to 4 of his friends in Belgium.
- He puts on his left sock and left shoe first (he is left-handed)
- Before leaving for the field, he wets the tip of his gloves
- When reaching the goal he hits the goal post with his boot and punches the middle of the goal net.
After all of this, he says he enters a trance and cannot be distracted.
