Chelsea are European kings again after beating Manchester City in the Champions League final in Porto. Here’s how we rated each Blues player.


Edouard Mendy: 7

Superbly protected by his defence, Mendy had very little to do and commanded his area well when called upon.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 8

Fully deserves the honour of lifting the trophy as captain. His performance summed up his Chelsea career: solid, always reliable and a role model for his team-mates.

Thiago Silva: 7

Was having a good game when he unfortunately had to go off injured late in the first half.

Antonio Rudiger: 8

Superb. Linked up well with Ben Chilwell and the highlight of a terrific defensive display was a crucial last-ditch challenge to deny Phil Foden in the first half.

Reece James: 9

Wow. A potentially career-defining game for James, who was absolutely fantastic at right-wing back. Raheem Sterling got no change at all from the youngster, who must now be regarded as a key player for club and country.

Jorginho: 7

Played a subtle but important role in Chelsea’s win. Helped them control the midfield, where City struggled all night.

N’Golo Kante: 9

Chelsea needed a vintage Kante display – and that’s what they got. He was everywhere, winning countless challenges, never letting City settle and always looking to get his team moving forward.

Ben Chilwell: 9

Another Chelsea man who played out of his skin. A constant threat going forward, not least when setting up a great first-half chance for Timo Werner, and defensively he was even better – giving Riyad Mahrez nothing on the flank.

Mason Mount: 8

A superb pass to set up Havertz for the goal was the highlight of a superb all-around display. Was always a problem for City’s defence and got through plenty of defensive work as well.

Kai Havertz: 9

Took his goal beautifully and his overall contribution was immense. Provided the physical presence in attack he was selected for. Also created a second-half opportunity for Christian Pulisic, who should have scored.

Timo Werner: 6

Once again, worked hard and caused the opposing defence major problems by taking up some great positions, but struggled in front of goal. Missed two great chances in the first half after being set up by Havertz and then Chilwell. Replaced by Pulisic midway through the second half.

Andreas Christensen: 8

Fantastic after coming on for Silva. Didn’t put a foot wrong. Thwarted Foden with a cracking block late on.

Christian Pulisic: 6

Lively after coming on, but should have scored after being set up by Havertz. Mateo Kovacic, who came on for the final 11 minutes, did a solid job.
