Brentford boss Frank joins calls for subs rethink

Brentford boss Thomas Frank agrees with the calls for five substitutes to be reintroduced into English football.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp both argued for the number of allowed substitutions to be raised from three to five again, after their sides drew 1-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Frank has said the same thing after each of the Bees’ last three games, which completed a hectic period of seven matches in three weeks.

When football restarted in the summer, sides were allowed to make five substitutions, but the idea was scrapped when the new season started in September.

However, speaking after the recent win at Luton, Frank said: “I can’t understand it. In the Europa League, in the Champions League, they have five subs. All the national teams have five subs.

“In Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, all of them have five subs – and we as the biggest football nation, with the best league (Premier League) and maybe the sixth best league in the Championship, we only have three. What are we thinking? We need to change it.”

After Saturday’s draw with Middlesbrough, Frank again called for the rule to be changed, adding: “Sometimes you get more information and you change that decision. It happens all the time in real life.”
