The defensive shortcomings which plagued QPR last season were evident again as they made an all-too familiar swift exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of lower-division opposition.

Rangers, with Rob Dickie making his debut and Tom Carroll also playing his first game since being signed, made the perfect start, with Ryan Manning heading in Ilias Chair’s left-wing corner after little more than a minute.

But Chair giving away possession just after the half-hour mark led to Plymouth equalising – Joe Edwards netted after being teed up by Ryan Hardie

Osman Kakay’s first senior goal hauled Rangers level straight after they fell behind early in the second half.

After Danny Mayor‘s shot from just inside the box beat keeper Joe Lumley, Kakay thumped home a cracking right-footed strike.

Paul Smyth, on as a substitute, hit the post after exchanging passes with Chair.

Had that gone in, Rangers might well have gone on to win the tie.

But the decisive moment came 12 minutes from time, when QPR were punished for more sloppy work at the back.

Dom Telford was given space to cross from the left and an unchallenged Frank Nouble stretched to volley in from close range.
