Conte admits he got team selection wrong against Watford
Antonio Conte admitted he might have got his team selection wrong against Watford.
Chelsea were beaten 4-1 at Vicarage Road, where they played with 10 men after Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off just after the half-hour mark.
The French midfielder was having a dreadful game prior to his dismissal and several other players underperformed on a dismal night for Chelsea.
“For sure I have to take the responsibility because maybe I made the wrong decision with the starting 11,” Conte said.
“I have great disappointment. Our performance was very poor. We started very bad, without personality, with fear.
“We played without personality from the start. I didn’t see confidence to play football. The level of our performance was very poor.”
However, Conte insisted he was not worried about his future.
It was a second successive heavy defeat for Conte’s side and has increased speculation he could be axed as Blues boss.
The Italian declared: “I am not worried about my job. I work every day and give 120%. If this is enough, it’s OK. Otherwise the club can take a different decision. But I am not worried.
“Every press conference: ‘Are you worried about your job?’. No. I am not worried. Tomorrow is another day. I can be the Chelsea coach, or not. Which is the problem?
“My soul is clear. I go to sleep without the problem. I do my job and if this is enough, it’s OK. Otherwise, I go home and I have zero problem to sleep well.”
Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League table, just one point ahead of rivals Tottenham in the battle to secure a Champions League place.
“For sure it is a difficult moment when you lose 3-0 against Bournemouth and then against Watford,” Conte admitted.
“I tried to warn everyone about the difficulty of our path and the difficulty to find a place in the Champions League.
“But now we are facing a lot of difficulty and you can see we performed very bad.”
