Boss Smith says Bees deserved victory
Brentford boss Dean Smith dismissed suggestions his side enjoyed a stroke of good luck against Millwall.
Romaine Sawyers scored the winner at Griffin Park, firing home from near the edge of the penalty area after collecting Henrik Dalsgaard’s pass a couple of minutes into the second half.
Millwall striker Lee Gregory touched the ball into the net with 11 minutes remaining after Dalsgaard had brought down Jed Wallace.
However, referee Lee Probert had already blown for the penalty – and keeper Dan Bentley dived to his right to keep out Gregory’s spot-kick.
But Smith said: “If he lets the game play on we get a free-kick for offside as the lad was offside when he puts it in.
“And I don’t think it was a penalty. I’m not sure Henrik Dalsgaard does a long wrong. It’s a bit of swan-dive by their lad.”
Brentford had to work hard for their victory – their first at home this season.
Bentley produced two other excellent saves and the hosts were hanging on until the final whistle despite having created chances themselves.
“After we scored we became emotionally involved in a battle and gave away some silly free-kicks, but we certainly showed some spirit as well,” said Smith.
