Ipswich 2 Brentford 0

Goals either side of half-time from Martyn Waghorn and Joe Garner gave Ipswich victory over Brentford.

The summer signings from Rangers ensured Ipswich continue to share top spot in the Championship after the opening four games.

Waghorn’s goal 10 minutes before the break came against the run of play when he reacted quickest after a challenge on David McGoldrick and fired home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Ipswich doubled their lead just six minutes into the second half. Grant Ward’s cross following a corner on the right was met by the head of Garner, and despite the efforts of Nico Yennaris to hook it off the line, goal-line technology saw the goal awarded.

For Brentford it was a case of what might have been as the visitors spurned a host of chances throughout the first half.

First Romaine Sawyers saw his shot from the left saved by Bartosz Bialkowski. Then Yennaris’ shot bounced off the bar before Florian Jozefzoon headed straight at the keeper from six yards out.

French defender Yoann Barbet impressed at the back for Brentford, twice making one-on-one tackles to deny first Freddie Sears and then Garner.

Summer signings Neal Maupay and Ollie Watkins were both heavily involved during the first half for a Brentford side playing without the injured Jota.

But the Bees faded during the second half to leave manager Dean Smith concerned at a haul of just one point from the opening four games.
