Luiz challenged to maintain fine form
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has challenged defender David Luiz to maintain the high level of performance he has produced since rejoining the club.
The switch to a central defensive trio has sparked an eight-game winning run that has taken the Blues to the top of the Premier League table.
And Brazilian Luiz has been key to the success, playing as the ball-playing centre-half since the switch in formation.
Conte said: “I think he is playing good football with great attention and concentration. I like this but he has to continue in this way.
“You can play fantastic football but if you make mistakes it changes the opinion. I always say to the the players, “stay focused we have to think game my game”. The next game is the most important.”
Chelsea’s move for Luiz was widely criticised, with many questioning his defensive abilities
But the 29-year-old has played in each of the eight league matches in the winning sequence – the first six of which were achieved without conceding a goal.
Conte added: “I think David Luiz respect always – if he plays well or if he plays not so well.”
Chelsea face West Brom at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill once again expected to play in the back three as club captain John Terry is still not fit to return.
